What does the data center network look like in 2012?

by Mike Rinaldi on 1/12/12 3:53 PM

All signs point to 10 Gigabit and 40 Gigabit Ethernet gathering steam in the coming year.

Tidbits and predictions include 10 Gigabit and 40 Gigiabit Ethernet. Expect to see plenty of 10 Gigabit on server motherboards. You can even expect to see some 10 Gigabit Ethernet LAN-on-a-motherboard by early next year. All of which means 10 Gigibit at the edge and the start of 40 Gigabit in the core.

10 Gigabit Ethernet is a good starting point at the edge. It increases the bandwidth capacity for the backbone, and reduces network latency. And because it’s Ethernet, there’s built-in plug-and-play with existing equipment, reducing administration and operating costs.

Moreover, with 10 Gigabit Ethernet, there’s a clear roadmap to 40 Gigabit and 100 Gigabit Ethernet, which will be vital in meeting the growing bandwidth requirements that come with cloud computing.

Cloud Computing Among Topics Discussed at Technology Summit

by Mike Rinaldi on 10/17/11 11:38 AM

A new era in IT is upon us.  The 2011 Technology Training Summit and Expo will give you the knowledge you need to get ahead during this new Technology Era!

Virtualization has changed the game and affected every aspect of the data center.  It is not just about server virtualization – desktop virtualization, voice, video, mobility, collaboration, unified fabric, cloud, and tablet devices all impact how we do business now. We had the initial Technology Training Summit on Thursday, October 13, 2011 in King of Prussia, PA.  There were multiple training sessions and an expo where you had the opportunity to:

• Get the latest information and technology updates related to the data center, collaboration, wireless, and much more
• Experience live demonstrations showcasing the latest technologies
• Meet leading technology experts from major vendors and network with your industry peers.

There were many manufacturers including Cisco, Emerson Network Power, EMC, and VMware in attendance to answer questions and provide information on their specific technology and solution offerings.  Over 100 IT people from multiple industries attended the informational sessions this past Thursday.

DVL's Local Data Center Users' Forum Held At Microsoft

by Mike Rinaldi on 10/10/11 4:03 PM

Every 3 to 4 months, DVL hosts a small Data Center Users' Forum.  The mission of the DCUF is to provide a commercial free forum where members collaborate on relevant mission-critical issues, new technologies, customer testimonials, and best practices affecting reliability, availability, and lowest cost of operation.

Data Center users' forum

This week, the DCUF, which includes IT and facilities professionals from multiple industry types, discussed various topics including:  aisle containment systems, bridging the gap between IT and Facilities, outsourcing vs. keeping everything in-house, showing how valuable technology is to the bottom line, how to prove ROI, audits, root cause analysis, the impact of government regulations on data centers, what's the cost of your company's reputation?, free cooling, natural disasters, and redundancy.

Google Reveals Data Center Infrastructure Energy Use-Are You Cloud Ready

by Mike Rinaldi on 9/22/11 8:19 AM

Stung by concerns that using Google is bad for the planet, the Internet search giant has revealed exactly how much electricity the company uses and how much greenhouse gases it produces in an effort to show its business model is environmentally friendly.

Experts say it's true: Watching a video on Google's Youtube site is indeed more energy-efficient than watching a DVD that had to be manufactured, packaged, shipped and purchased.
