Bristol, PA – March 12, 2013 –DVL Group, a provider of data center infrastructure management solutions, partnered with 12 data centers to help them save at least 1,000,000 watts of electrical energy.

DVL has officially announced the three organizations that saved the most watts, which earns them the prestigious Less Watts Award.

The winner in the first category, with data centers less than 1,000 sq. ft., is Central Bucks School District. Temple University took the second category, made up of data centers from 1,000 to 5,000 sq. ft. The winner of the third category, encompassing data centers greater than 5,000 sq. ft., is SunGard.

In addition to honoring the winners with the Less Watts Award, DVL is also making donations of $1,000 in each winner’s name to the Delaware Valley Green Building Council (DVGBC).

“The Less Watts competition has been a blast,” says DVL Chief Executive Officer Mike Beck. “Everyone who participated was incredibly cooperative, enthusiastic and just really great to work with. We couldn’t be happier to present the award to these outstanding organizations and look forward to helping others save energy with our “Less Watts” program.”  

The Less Watts Award ceremony, taking place today, is the official kickoff for the annual Greenbuild Conference. This annual conference, hosted by DVGBC this year in Philadelphia from November 20-22, will feature speakers, networking opportunities, industry showcases, LEED workshops and tours of Philadelphia’s green buildings.

The auction site has shared a new methodology for tracking energy efficiency

As 2012 draws to a close many of us are planning ahead for 2013, both for our professional and personal lives, formulating a list of goals, objectives, and even a vacation or two. With that in mind I started to create a top-ten list of ‘should do’ items for data center professionals in 2013. However as always I got a bit carried away and had to pare the list down to a manageable baker’s dozen.

One, Take care of yourself. Nothing difficult but an all too important concept many of us take for granted or leaves until we are ‘less busy’. There simply is no better time than the present to start an exercise program, weight and/or health management regime to put a little more energy back into our life. This also includes a little time for some R&R, education and self improvement, and other activities we’ll cover below. Start 2013 with a plan to take care of number one. The data center and IT systems communities wouldn't be the same without you.

How do you chose your data center rack systems?

Rack systems are strategic assets that play a key role in system uptime and data center availability and reliability. They can be counted on to be flexible and adaptive to accommodate rapid change. They can accommodate monitoring systems that can enhance the management of the data center ecosystem. They are, in short, a vital component of any data center.

The white paper notes that racks are now available that improve equipment installation speed via tool-less, “slide in, slide out” procedures. Taller racks take advantage of the data center’s headroom, while rack depth has increased to accommodate equipment. Side breathing needs have increased rack width to meet new manufacturers’ specifications and to enhance equipment performance and life through hot-aisle/cold-aisle arrangements.
